Rachael Hunter is a painter from Minnesota and a recent graduate of UW–Madison in Wisconsin. Growing up as an only child in the Midwest, she spent much of her time outdoors, letting her imagination run wild. That playful, sometimes eerie world of make-believe continues to influence her art. Creativity has always been a constant in her life, thanks in large part to her mother, who once dreamed of becoming an artist but was discouraged by a college professor. Her mother’s story inspired Rachael to embrace her own creativity—no matter what.
Rachael loves painting figures in slightly unsettling or ambiguous situations, using bold colors—especially blues and reds—to add intrigue. She paints expressively and intuitively, sometimes starting with a plan and other times letting the process guide her. Her focus is more on capturing a feeling or atmosphere than on fine details, blending vibrant, surreal scenes with intense colors to create work that feels both striking and thought-provoking. She primarily works in oil, acrylic, and flashe paints, following whatever feels exciting in the moment and intentionally leaving space for viewers to bring their own interpretations.
Rachael finds inspiration all around her—from the stories her friends share to everyday moments that linger in her mind. She often paints people she knows, capturing their dreams, quirks, and the small details that make up their lives. Her friends and fellow artists play a significant role in shaping her creative process. She also loves making art with others, finding inspiration in the energy of collaboration and the exchange of ideas. These influences come together in her work, creating a blend of the people, places, and stories that fill her life.

Rachael's first solo art show and mixer was a blast! It was a night of drawing and coloring together, good beer, and great company. Rachael's paintings will be up through Febuary 2025.
I would be happy to meet in person to discuss commissions, potential purchases of my artwork, or other opportunities. If you're local to the Madison area, let's grab a coffee and chat.
